The Dental/Maxillofacial Anesthesiology Residency Program offers an externship in anesthesiology for dental students so they may explore this specialized area of dental practice prior to enrolling in a dental/maxillofacial anesthesiology residency training program.

This externship enables pre-doctoral students in the latter half of their third year of dental education, or currently in their fourth year, and who are in good standing, to observe and participate in the full range of anesthesiology training offered in our residency program, including conscious sedation, deep sedation and general anesthesia for both intubated and non-intubated pediatric, adult, and medically/developmentally compromised patients. The extern will also participate in all resident seminars and lectures during this time. The length of the externship varies by arrangement, but is usually 3 days.  This externship is sponsored by the Ohio State University College of Dentistry.

Prerequisites: Applications from third or fourth year students of an accredited dental college who demonstrate sound academic performance in areas important to anesthesiology (e.g. anxiety & pain control, physiology, will be accepted to compete for an externship position. In addition, the student must have both written permission, and evidence of medical malpractice insurance, from their home institution.

Evaluation and requirements for passing: Attendance at all didactic and clinical assignments is necessary for a passing grade. All students will be evaluated by the program director and other appropriate faculty. The evaluation will be based upon the student's attitude, eagerness to participate in discussions and clinical activities, extent of outside reading and improvement of conceptual understanding of anesthesiology topics and the clinical skills learned and practiced.
