Supervised, Advised and assisted the establishment of the Ohio State University Chapter of the Dental Anesthesia Club for Students (DACS).
My undergraduate teaching has been to the dental hygiene classes where I have taught local anesthetics as part of the College curriculum and in addition presently present 1-2 full-weekend courses annually for graduated dental hygienists on Local Anesthetics and two or three 1-day courses annually on Nitrous Oxide administration. Both these courses have a significant academic and clinical component.
It is a particular concern and interest of mine to improve the understanding, implication and application of local anesthetics in the practice of dental hygiene reflecting patient need, practitioner education and future needs for this area of clinical care.
Outside of the curricula courses and weekend courses taught to the dental hygiene practitioners, the idea offering our students small group teaching in local anesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation is being considered and developed.
In addition to this, I am the course director for DH 3120 which provides the medicine, pathology and pharmacology tuition to the dental hygiene students in their senior year. Within this course I am responsible for the teaching of medicine, pharmacology and the clinical application of acute pain control and emergency management in the dental clinic.
The course presents a large amount of relevant information at a time when the students are only beginning to be aware of the importance of much of this information. Presenting this in a manner that emphasizes the future importance of this material, does not overwhelm the student and one that also stimulates self-learning is personally challenging. I am continuously making an effort to respond to departmental and student comments/demands and at the same time trying to improve my own performance in this arena as a teacher by working with UCAT and colleagues who are clearly very successful teachers.
D6612 - I am course director for the Pharmacology 2 course given to our dental students in their 3rd professional year. This is an academic course that provides a large amount of clinically relevant education from acute pain control, to intraoperative sedation, pharmacology and application of antibiosis, emergency medicine and the management of emergencies in the dental suite/office. My goal here is not only clear and ordered communication of relevant material, but to stress, by clinical example, the importance of much of this material that many students will only have a limited opportunity to practice during their professional education.
It is my hope for both of these large and significant courses that we can continue to develop academic and, where appropriate, practical components/exercises into the courses that would improve understanding, practice and integration of important concepts into the clinical environment.
In this year we have been able to complete the master's research and thesis of Dr. Sarah Leach.
I am also the master's advisor for two second year anesthesiology residents on the projects:
Finally I am developing at this time three master's projects for our incoming 3 anesthesiology residents who will be beginning our residency program in June.
I was particularly honored in 2013 to have been awarded recognition for my teaching and support of the dental hygiene students and graduate students when I was awarded with honorary membership of the Sigma Phi Alpha National Dental Hygiene Honor Society.
It continues to be my aim to promote the integration of dental hygiene practitioners into the clinical practice of dentistry by developing an excellent academic background together with safe, competent, knowledgeable practitioners.
